What is Gluten? When Should It Be Avoided?

It’s an interesting time to live in. Some people are enjoying their carefree lifestyle whereas others are becoming fitness freaks. Between absolute freedom and fitness fanaticism, it’s possible to take a healthy middle path. Going gluten-free is a way to encourage healthy lifestyles without torturing your taste buds.

In recent times, gluten-free diets have become a touted talk in the world of healthy foods. From big brands to nutritionists, everyone in the health industry is talking about it. Are all these amplified sound bites? Only for business? Or is there any verity in their claims?

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a kind of protein. It is mainly found in many grains such as wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is common in bread, cereal, pasta, and pizza. This protein does not offer any essential nutritional benefits.

Gluten triggers an immune reaction in people with celiac disease. After consuming foods containing gluten, these people develop damage and inflammation in their intestinal tracts and other parts of their bodies.

According to the latest estimates, 1% of the world population suffers from celiac disease. If you have this problem, you should stick to a gluten-free diet. In bygone days when the concept and benefits of a gluten-free diet were almost unknown, it was difficult to find out gluten-free snacks. But nowadays, restaurants and grocery stores offer so many options under the heading ‘Gluten Free’ that you will almost get spoilt for a choice.

These gluten-free alternatives are no less inferior to conventional foods, either in quality or taste. Gluten-free diets are not only meant for those with celiac disease, but other people can also enjoy the delicacies.

Who Should Avoid Gluten?

As mentioned above, those suffering from celiac disease should avoid gluten-containing foods. By doing so, they can prevent intestinal inflammation and live a healthy life. For them, a gluten-free diet is not an option but an obligation.

There are some people with high sensitivity to gluten. They don’t have celiac disease but whenever they eat food having gluten, they experience some problems such as abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, etc.

Wheat allergy is cited as one of the causes of such problems. Skin testing can quickly diagnose wheat allergies. Some call it non-celiac gluten hypersensitivity, a condition not properly defined.

Wrapping Up!

Whether or not you have celiac disease, if taking gluten-containing foods gives you problems, it will be wise to switch to gluten-free choices. The number of people adopting gluten-free mantras is on rising. They are happy with their new choices and doing well. So, you can too!
